UK Border Control Announcement

The UK government has announced that it will delay the introduction of new border controls, due on 1 January 2022 for goods entering Great Britain from the island of Ireland, while discussions on the Protocol on Ireland and Northern Ireland continue.

These arrangements are temporary, and the UK Government has committed to providing sufficient notice to traders for any future changes.

What does this mean?

  • Goods moving from the island of Ireland directly to Great Britain can continue to do so on the basis of the arrangements that currently apply.
  • Delayed customs declarations can continue to apply to those Exporters taking advantage of this.
  • If lodging full declarations, there will not be a requirement to lodge these in advance (pre-departure from Ireland).
  • IPAFFS pre-notification will not be required for goods imported into Great Britain from Ireland. ** note current requirements for live animals, germinal products, high risk ABP and high risk plant and plant products continue to apply.
  • Full customs requirements and IPAFFS pre-notification requirements will be introduced for imports from the rest of the EU into GB from 01 January 2022.

The Border Operating Model will be updated to reflect this. More details will be provided as they become available.

This is great news for Irish Exporters and provides additional time to prepare in particular for the IPAFFS notifications.

How BDO can help?

As there is now additional time to prepare for the Sanitary and Phytosanitary

(SPS) checks and controls, we will continue to run online SPS training sessions specific to your product category in Q1 next year. These sessions are limited in number and will take place primarily during January and February.

The cost for the training is €1,500 and is suitable for both beginners and those with experience in SPS formalities. More information on the training can be found here.

Should you wish to discuss your food import/export requirements, we would be delighted to assist you. Please contact myself ([email protected]) or Marie Farrell ([email protected]) to find out more.
