Hands-on from the start: My experience in BDO Ireland’s Graduate Programme

This year, we wanted you to hear directly from our trainees with answers to some of the key questions graduates face when choosing the right programme. We discuss Natasha's experience, from getting hands-on with client work in their first week to finding support and mentorship every step of the way. See her story below, and we hope it will support you in your decision-making process. Natasha Hannapy is a trainee in the Tax team, and joined BDO in 2023.

Why did you choose BDO Ireland’s Graduate Programme, and what stood out to you during the application process?

I chose BDO Ireland's Graduate Programme for its strong reputation and focus on hands-on experience. What stood out was the emphasis on mentorship and career development in a supportive environment.

Can you share a memorable experience where you felt truly supported or valued by the team at BDO?

A memorable experience was when I was assigned a challenging project early on, and the team at BDO was incredibly supportive. They provided guidance, regular check-ins, and valuable feedback, which made me feel valued and helped me grow in my role.

How has BDO helped you balance work and personal development? Are there any specific initiatives or benefits that you’ve found particularly helpful?

BDO has helped me balance work and personal development through flexible working arrangements for eg early finish fridays and continuous learning opportunities. The mentorship program and access to training resources have been particularly helpful in supporting both my career growth and personal development.

What kind of real-world projects have you been involved in, and how have they helped you grow professionally?

All the work at BDO is real-world, and within my first week, I was already working on client tax matters. This hands-on experience has helped me quickly develop practical tax skills, deepen my understanding of tax regulations, and grow professionally through direct involvement with client tax issues from the start.

What advice would you give to new graduates considering a career at BDO, and what can they expect from their time here?

For new graduates considering a career at BDO, I’d suggest being eager to learn and ready for hands-on work from the start. You can expect to gain practical experience in real client tax matters and receive strong support and guidance from a helpful team.
