Can you tell us about your beginnings at BDO, the department you joined, and how that compares with where you are today?
I joined BDO’s Graduate Programme as part of the Audit department. I worked with a diverse range of clients — Tech, Clothing, Abattoir, Services, Charity, and many more. I left BDO as a Senior Manager, transitioning into an industry role. Now, I’m Financial Controller of Terex, a manufacturing company listed on the US Stock Exchange.
What first brought you to BDO, and what were your key takeaways from the Graduate Programme?
BDO, being a top-ranking firm, was a real draw. I attended their graduate evening and knew it was a perfect fit for me. The management team was personable, friendly, professional, and had a strong client base. I knew I was going to have an excellent experience – and I did.
What did the transition from practice to your current industry role look like? How did your time at BDO shape your approach?
I was fortunate to work with senior management who had strong personalities and high expectations. I respected them, learned from them — and had great nights out alongside them too! They taught me how to hold my own in high-pressure environments while remaining professional and composed.
At BDO, I learned how to communicate with impact, challenge ideas thoughtfully, and present with confidence. Those years laid the foundations for how I operate today: a professional, structured approach with a focus on delivering value for our team, company, and stakeholders.
I would pose two questions:
First, is this firm a good fit for you, personally? This is important — three and a half years of your life will be spent with this firm. Make sure it’s an environment where you will learn, have fun, and feel valued. Always attend the firm’s events to get a feel for the people, the place, and the type of clients they work with. Secondly, what industry or role do you see yourself in five years? Aim to work for a firm that has clients aligned to your longer-term prospects — whether that’s charity, manufacturing, tech or something else.
Final thoughts
Tara’s journey shows how the right Graduate Programme can open doors far beyond the training contract. With a strong foundation, you can carry your skills, confidence, and values into any environment — whether that’s continuing in practice, moving into industry, or exploring opportunities across sectors.
