My initial concern was that I needed to have some sort of tax background before I started my grad program, and that I was expected to be able to answer general tax queries. As tax is so broad and always changing, this was an unrealistic expectation I had in my head. BDO provides extensive training and mentorship throughout your career and encourages you to ask questions, even if it is something you think is straightforward. We were provided with the tools to succeed in our roles, and I wasn’t expected to know everything on my first day. Everyone is always learning on the job, whether it is a first-year trainee or your senior manager, there is always something new to learn and improve on in the role.
When I first started in my role, I was quite stressed because I felt that I needed to know every single detail about the position before applying. However, one of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned from working in a Corporate Governance role is that it’s impossible to know everything from the outset. Even now, I continue to discover new aspects of my role that I hadn’t encountered at the beginning. The dynamic nature of a company secretary’s work means that no two days are ever the same. This is largely due to the variety of ad-hoc projects and unexpected issues that arise, which require adaptability and a willingness to learn on the job. As a result, I find myself constantly learning and developing new skills, while also tackling unique challenges each day. This continuous learning environment is one of the things I enjoy most about my role, as it keeps my work both interesting and rewarding.
I wish I had done more research into what a job in tax entails and the associated exams related to it. If you are looking to pursue a career in tax (or audit, consulting, etc), it is important to understand the type of exams you are interested in taking and what best suits your aspirations and goals. I had gone into my internship without really understanding what type of role and exams a career in tax looks like. If you are in college, I encourage you to research the exemptions you may be eligible for in your professional exams, especially before your final year of college, as completing the right modules may exempt you from some exams. BDO has always supported my exams by providing study leave and additional training. However, I encourage you to have a good understanding of the role and exams you are looking to take before starting your career in tax (or any other career for that matter). James Ryan, Tax Trainee
Reflecting on my experience, I wish I had proactively engaged with a broader range of colleagues—not only within my own department, but also across different teams throughout the firm. Building these connections early on would have accelerated my integration into the organisation and provided me with a more holistic understanding of BDO’s culture, values, and ways of working. Expanding my network from the outset would likely have helped me adapt more quickly, facilitated collaboration, and enhanced my ability to navigate the firm’s resources and support systems. It’s important to be intentional about reaching out to colleagues across all levels and departments to ensure a smoother transition and deeper cultural immersion. It actually was when I sat down and typed up my resume. Seeing all my academic achievements and experiences actually listed helped me see how much I’ve grown and learn. It really gave me a confidence boost.
I had a University friend circle when I was preparing for my grad jobs, so we shared a lot of insights from job applications to interviews. We did mock interviews to boost confidence, and that really helped me. Sara Abraham, Audit Trainee
One factor that contributed significantly to my sense of preparedness was establishing an effective routine—from consistently waking up and commuting to work, to implementing structured methods for tracking and managing my tasks. This approach enabled me to start each day with clarity and maintain productivity throughout my work responsibilities. Jessica Clooney, FS Tax Trainee
One thing I would advise is taking the time to clearly understand why you want to join BDO and pursue your specific role. Having a strong understanding of my motivation not only made the interview process smoother but also helped me provide more authentic and distinctive answers, rather than the generic ones interviewers expect. Thinking outside the box and personalising my responses was much easier once I understood what genuinely attracted me to BDO and the position. This preparation helped me feel more confident and well-prepared throughout the process. Sally Ann Farrell, Audit Trainee
My key takeaway from this process is the importance of self-confidence and trusting in your own abilities. I have also come to appreciate that, as the saying goes, what is meant for you will not pass you by.
I think, honestly, the biggest thing I learned is how important it is to really know what you want. Once you figure that out, the interview process feels a lot less nerve-wracking and much more natural. If you can clearly explain your motivations, everything else tends to fall into place.
Hearing directly from grads is a great way to understand the journey — but we also checked in with someone who’s seen the process from a wider lens. This insight from our HR team reflects the kind of support and perspective that helps candidates feel prepared from the very beginning.
I wish more candidates understood that your willingness to learn is just as valuable as your credentials. Applying is the first step—don’t let uncertainty stop you from exploring opportunities that could be a great fit. Often, your potential and perspective matter more than a perfect résumé.
Every path is shaped by the person walking it — and preparation makes a real difference. The more you understand your strengths and values, the more confident you’ll feel when it’s time to decide. Focus on what drives you, be honest about what you enjoy, and trust that showing up with curiosity and intention is a powerful place to start.
