BDO features on The Irish Times podcast – Inside Business: Giving elite athletes' finances a sporting chance

Ciarán Medlar, Partner and Head of Tax, and Cian O'Sullivan, Tax Director, joined Ciarán Hancock on this week’s episode of The Irish Times podcast, Inside Business, to discuss BDO’s sports advisory unit which helps elite sports people and entertainers with their tax planning.

Ciarán, is the Partner in charge of taxation services in BDO in Ireland and also leads the Sport Advisory Unit. BDO is the first and only Irish professional services firm to have a dedicated sports unit which advises sports professionals, clubs and National Governing Bodies. He advises on all aspects of their financial and commercial planning. He also advises a number of high-net-worth entertainers and musicians on their Irish and global tax affairs. Ciarán is also chairman of Shamrock Rovers football club.

Cian, former All-Ireland winning Dublin footballer, joined BDO in June, as a Director in the Private Client Tax team and the Sports Advisory Unit. He advises entrepreneurs, professionals, owner-managed businesses, sportspeople, sporting organisations and entertainers on their tax planning and compliance needs.

Ciarán and Cian discuss the work they do for clients, the financial hit of the pandemic on sports and how Brexit has meant Irish teenager footballers need to look further afield for a professional contract. Cian provides his thoughts on the future of the Dublin GAA team, following their defeat to Mayo in the All-Ireland semi-final.
