“Give it a try, feel the fear and do it anyway” – 60 Seconds with Eimear O’Hare

In line with continued growth in client demand, Eimear O’Hare has taken on an enhanced role advising private shareholders and management teams on strategic initiatives including acquisitions, fundraising, and exit planning. Her experience across a broad range of corporate transactions, combined with her collaborative approach with private equity, banks and legal advisors, supports BDO’s commitment to delivering trusted, pragmatic advice to business owners.
Eimear spoke to Business & Finance about her role, what drives her, and what clients can expect when working with the Deal Advisory team at BDO Ireland.

Q: What was your first job ?

During secondary school, I worked in the nearby grocery store. While in college, I worked part-time as an assistant at a local accountancy practice working on VAT compliance and accounts prep.  In many ways, this job led me to my current career.

Q: What pushed you to pursue a career in this field ?

After completing my GCSEs (Junior Cert), I left grammar school to pursue an intensive focus on ICT for A-Levels (Leaving Cert), initially planning to study Computer Science at University. However, an engaging business module during my studies sparked a new interest, ultimately steering me towards an honour’s degree in Accountancy.

My career journey started when I accepted the BDO Audit graduate programme, where I developed a strong foundation in financial reporting and assurance. I was curious about the broader range of services BDO offers, particularly how other departments contribute to shaping client outcomes. After an insightful conversation with Katharine Byrne, Partner and Head of Deal Advisory, I became fascinated by the opportunity to work where strategy meets finance – driving growth and supporting large-scale financial decisions for Irish businesses.

I transitioned into a leadership role as Head of Private Equity Coverage for BDO Ireland and am now an active member of the BDO Global Private Equity Group.

Q. What would you regard as your greatest (career) achievement to date?

One of my greatest career achievements has been building a diverse skill set by progressing from Audit into Deal Advisory at BDO Ireland. This evolution in my career required me to quickly master new technical and commercial competencies, expanding my professional capabilities and perspective. As I took on more responsibility, I had the chance to share what I’d learned and the insights I’d gained with colleagues at our firm-wide conference. It was rewarding to contribute to our collective knowledge, connect with others across the firm, and continue growing both professionally and personally through these interactions.

Q. In one sentence, how would you define success?

It’s about being happy and proud of what you accomplished in a day.

Q. What's the best piece of advice you have ever been given ?

Give it a try, feel the fear and do it anyway.

Q. How do you handle adversity ?

Communication is key. I’m part of a great team so it is important to have clear communication. In personal circumstances, it is not about moving on but moving forward.

Q. How do you relax ?

I really should say an activity with my kids, but with a 3-year-old and 2-year-old at home, it is never relaxing. Sign me up for a spa day or brunch with my family or friends.

Q. What are your aspirations for the future of your business ?

My aspiration is to continue building out the BDO Ireland Private Equity practice into a market-leading advisory team recognised for delivering exceptional value to our clients.  We are the go-to advisors for private equity investors seeking opportunities in Ireland and beyond known for our rigorous analysis, proactive client service, and ability to deliver successful outcomes on complex transactions.

I see great value in strengthening our relationships within the private equity ecosystem - working closely with investors, portfolio companies, and other stakeholders to help drive growth, innovation, and long-term value creation.

Q. What new trends are emerging in your industry ?

Our team are seeing an increase in consolidation within the accountancy sector.  We have been involved from an M&A perspective on other industry roll ups and now it has hit our own sector at a fast high-profile pace.

Q. What are the challenges facing the industry going forward ?

Rapid advances in automation, artificial intelligence, and data analytics are fundamentally changing how accountancy services are delivered. Firms must invest in new technologies to remain competitive, but this also brings challenges in upskilling staff, integrating systems, and managing cybersecurity risks. Being able to mentor staff and bring through the new intake of accountancy trainees to ensure they become well rounded advisors is key in how we service our clients and to future-proof their skills.
