BDO eager to nurture 'brightest and best'

26 August 2019

Siobhán Byrne, HR manager, speaks to The Sunday Business Post about BDO's graduate recruitment programme, which is open for applications all year round.

BDO Ireland has a strong presence at graduate fairs and on university campuses when it comes to graduate recruitment. But the leading global accountancy and advisory firm welcomes applications from graduates year-round.

Siobhán Byrne, HR Manager, said there was no time limit on the process. “Our four-step application process includes an application form, video interview, online assessment and face to face interview with a partner. At BDO, we know that our people are our greatest asset. We invest in our people and nurture their technical expertise and ability to develop strong client relationships, in a team-driven environment and within a firm with a global presence. Employees benefit from smaller client teams, a wide variety of clients across industry sectors and an excellent partner to staff ratio.”

BDO’s graduate programme has been running for a number of years.

“We offer a wide range of opportunities for graduates to join us and we are flexible in terms of offerings and exam routes,” Byrne said. “We have prime city centre offices in Dublin, Limerick and Cork and another 1,600 offices in 162 countries, so there is no limit to where you can go and what you can do.”

BDO has 50 posts available across a variety of service lines such as tax (both Direct and Indirect), audit, advisory, corporate secretarial, management consulting and technical consulting. Each year, the firm looks at new opportunities across all services and expanding offerings.

What can graduates gain from working at BDO? According to Byrne, they will embark on an exciting learning curve that covers all aspects of the business. There will also be an opportunity to pursue further studies with professional examinations in the mix.

“Each of our graduates gain practical experience across a variety of industries, while fully supported in their professional examinations, which they have decided to pursue,” she said. “Throughout their time with the firm, they have unrivalled access to both the Partner group and the Senior Management Team, due to our open and collaborative style of working. We also offer a structured buddy programme, enhanced study support and a wide range of benefits and social events.

“We seek candidates with a grade 2.1 or higher from all degree disciplines.  Extraordinary dedication is something we greatly value and, at every level of our business, we hire the brightest and best. At BDO, we remove all barriers to your success. A personable attitude, problem solving skills and an ability to get things done are (valued as highly) as brain power and academic qualifications.”

Byrne said graduates can look forward to a warm and helpful environment when they come to BDO, with opportunities to enhance careers and gain experience across a myriad of departments.

“At BDO you can be yourself. We value you as an individual and want you to realise your aspirations,” she said. “You have a voice and your opinion counts. We give you the challenge and support you need, and you are able to shape your own career according to your strengths, skills and personality.

“Working at BDO enhances your professional development at all stages of your career. Few firms offer the same breadth and quality of work, responsibility and experience.  We work with clients of all types and sizes, in every sector, which our trainees will be exposed to.  We recognize and reward your high performance and you have the opportunity to excel, progress and share in our success. We are clear on what we expect from you and what you can expect in return.”

And what makes BDO stand out from its competitors as a prime option for graduates? You will learn how to be the best.

“BDO is about exceptional client service,” said Byrne. “This means we take the time to get to know our clients well, to understand what they want to achieve and then give specially tailored advice. So, we choose graduates who can engage their personalities as well as their skills, and who can take the initiative and find imaginative solutions.

“In return, we provide highly competitive rewards and benefits, and recognition of your outstanding performance. Indeed, many of our trainees have grown and developed within the firm and now hold management, director and partner roles with us.

“It's worth adding that this is simply a good place to work. We always work together as a team to serve our clients. We are welcoming and supportive and we want you to succeed as much as you do. Most importantly, you always know exactly what we expect from you, and what you can expect from us in return.”
