The Show Must Go On! on RTÉ After School Hub

03 December 2020

BDO are delighted to be sponsoring The Ark’s 25th Birthday season. The Ark has teamed up with RTÉ’s After School Hub to bring the magic of Christmas plays into every child’s home and teach them how to become theatre makers to put on their own plays.

With the help of The After School Hub muinteoirí, Ark artists will guide you through how to write, stage, design and perform your own play in your sitting room!

For one week, After School Hub will bring a touch of drama to homes across the country. From Monday 30 November to Friday 4 December, After School Hub Múinteoirí Ray, Cliona, Emer and John will be joined each day in the Hub by different theatre professionals who will guide children watching at home as to how to put on their very own play.

A wonderful, short wintery play has been specially written by playwright Mollie Molumby. You can download the script in either English or Irish below.

Here's a little taste of what's in store...

Monday 30 November
Director Shaun Dunne and playwright Mollie Molumby will be on hand to show you what's needed to get started on your play.

Tuesday 1 December
An important part of writing a play is getting feedback on the script to make sure it's going to be as exciting and fun as possible. Mollie and Shaun have asked The Ark's Children's Council to give their opinion on Mollie's script to help Mollie make changes before the final draft. Now to think of staging the play...

Wednesday 2 December
On Wednesday, Shaun is meeting with costume designer Saileog and actor Jade about dressing for the show. Jade has to play lots of different characters in the play so Saileog is helping her find some costume pieces that will make them stand out.

Thursday 3 December
Another important thing to consider is your sitting room theatre set. Set designer Sarah is here to help! Sarah will show us how to create the world of your play using things you can find around your home.

Friday 4 December
We're nearly ready for the show! Now for some music...we are joined by composer Tom Lane to help you to use music and sound in your play.

Now it's over to you at home to take the reins and make your own Wintry Play!

Share your Wintry Play

Once you are ready to put on your Wintry Play at home, we would love to see it! If you would like to share your play, a grown-up can film it, upload it to rte.ie/learn and the team at After School Hub will try and show some clips on the programme.
