Derek is a Partner and Head of Tax in BDO Ireland. He currently leads the firm’s tax offering in the Real Estate and Construction Sector.

Derek is a Chartered Accountant and an Associate of the Irish Taxation Institute. He has a BA in Accounting and Finance, an MBS in Accounting from DCU and a Diploma in Legal Studies from the King’s Inns. 


SERVICES & SPECIALISM

Prior to joining BDO, Derek worked for a large accountancy firm where he gained experience in international tax planning and considerable expertise in the structuring and taxation of financial services companies such as securitisation vehicles, general and life insurers and reinsurers, treasury operations and fund managers. In addition, Derek has experience in tax risk management, Sarbanes-Oxley regulations and shipping industry structures.

Since joining BDO in 2006, Derek has worked on numerous tax planning issues including advising on corporate restructuring, research and development tax credits, establishment of IT companies’ European hub in Ireland and branch network throughout Europe, various Irish and international property deals, holding company structuring, tax due diligence and the availability of Ireland’s 12.5% corporation tax rate.

Particular areas of expertise include commercial and residential property structuring, tax based property deals including hotels, nursing homes and crèches and the Irish Research and Development Credit and Intellectual Property regimes. Derek has experience with international compliance and has extensive experience in dealing with double tax relief and tax treaties and in co-ordinating tax solutions for international groups.

Derek is a member of the BDO’s Real Estate and Construction team which draws on the resources of experienced sector professionals as well as direct access to an extensive national and international network.

As audit, tax, and consulting advisors, we provide swift resolution of issues and challenges, from minimising tax liability to identifying real estate tax and other incentives. The BDO Real Estate and Construction team are experienced in working with developers and builders and leverage that experience to provide unique insight into the market conditions in Ireland.
