
Research & Development Tax Credits and Grants
Dr. Imran Khan is a Director in BDO’s Research & Development Tax Credits and Grants team, advising innovative businesses on R&D tax credits, innovation incentives and related funding opportunities. He has significant experience in the identification, assessment and documentation of qualifying R&D activities.
He brings several years of industry experience in developing and commercialising innovative products and technologies, supporting organisations from early-stage R&D through to delivery.
He also leads and supports multi-disciplinary engagements across a broad range of industries, collaborating with BDO’s sector and technical specialists to deliver robust outcomes for clients.
His technical and industry experience spans software development, artificial intelligence, machine learning, data analytics and advanced engineering technologies. He works closely with businesses and their technical teams to understand complex technological developments and translate them into robust, commercially focused and defensible R&D incentive claims.
Imran specialises in R&D tax credits and innovation incentives, supporting businesses in identifying, assessing and documenting qualifying R&D activities. His technical background enables him to engage directly with engineers, software developers, scientists and other technical specialists to understand the technological challenges, uncertainties and advances arising from their projects. He provides engagement leadership, coordinating inputs across client stakeholders (R&D, engineering, and finance) and BDO specialists to ensure claims are well-governed, evidence-led and audit-ready.
He also supports clients in considering relevant innovation funding and grant opportunities, working with BDO’s wider specialist teams where appropriate. He works across multiple sectors, tailoring the approach to each client’s operating model, documentation standards and governance requirements.
Imran holds a PhD in Computer Science specialisation in Artificial Intelligence & Data Privacy from University College Cork (UCC), a Master’s degree in Computer Science, a Master’s degree in Electrical & Electronic Engineering, and a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering. He also holds a Certificate in Enterprise Development and Innovation from Trinity College Dublin and a Certificate in Data Protection. He lectures from time to time on artificial intelligence and related subjects and has published research papers and holds patents.
